We're delighted to report in the New Year’s Honours 2019, Grenville Chamberlain, our SCDC councillor for Hardwick, was awarded the OBE for services to the Caravan and Motorhome Club (CAMC) and to charity.
“I am deeply moved and honoured to receive this award,” said Grenville. “I believe it reflects the outstanding contribution our Club makes not only to society today but also to those less fortunate than ourselves.
“Across the Club many people work incredibly hard to raise much needed funds to help charities, both national and local, and although this award bears my name it is clear recognition of the efforts of them all.”
Grenville has been caravanning since he was seven and joined the Club in 1981 – and thanks to the press release put out by his club, we learn that throughout his 37 years of membership, he has participated in the all the CAMC activities, not only in the UK, but also internationally with the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) to champion road safety initiatives.*
Having served on various Club Centres, Councils and Committees, Grenville was elected Club Chairman in October 2007. He tours some 12,000 miles each year with his family and spends over 40 weekends each year attending Club events and supporting members.
“Grenville is admired and held in high regard by Club members, staff and fellow Committee members because of the care, patience, skill, leadership and long hours that he devotes to the Club,” said Nick Lomas, the Club's Director General.
“He is a true example of someone who is more than worthy of a lasting recognition for his selfless devotion to the Cub and to charitable causes.”
And one other thing we learnt: a sporting passions of Grenville’s is cycling – he led a Club team of 140 riders in the London to Brighton Bike Ride in 2010 which raised £42,000 for the British Heart Foundation (BHF), his Chairman’s nominated charity. He then raised £103,000 over a three-year period for BHF in other cycling challenges.
