Brandon Lewis, the Conservative Party Chairman, sent the following message to Party members this afternoon:
"As you will have seen, the ballot of Conservative Members of Parliament was held last night. The Parliamentary Party voted that it continues to have confidence in Theresa May as Leader of the Conservative Party, with 200 votes in favour and 117 votes against.
"Responding to the result, the Prime Minister made a further statement outside 10 Downing Street last night:"
This has been a long and challenging day, but at the end of it I am grateful to have received the backing of my colleagues in tonight’s ballot.
Whilst I am grateful for that support, a significant number of colleagues did cast their votes against me and I have listened to what they have said.
Following tonight’s vote, we must now focus on what the British people want: delivering Brexit and building a brighter future for the British people.
A Brexit which takes back control of our money, borders and laws; which protects jobs, security and the Union; and which brings our country back together, rather than entrenching division.
That has to begin here in Westminster, with politicians on all sides coming together and acting in the national interest.
For my part, I have heard what the House of Commons has said about the legal guarantee of no hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland in the Withdrawal Agreement.
When I go to the European Council tomorrow I will be seeking legal and political assurances on this matter that will satisfy the concerns of MPs.
While delivering Brexit is essential, it is not the only thing that matters to people. They want us to focus on the other vital issues too. The things that we all care about. The things we all got into politics to do.
Building a stronger economy, delivering first-class public services, and building the homes that families need.
We owe it to the people who sent us here to put their priorities first.
So tonight, that is our renewed mission: to deliver the Brexit that people voted for; to bring our country together again; and to build a country that truly works for everyone.
With best wishes,
Brandon Lewis
Conservative Party Chairman
