On Saturday, 17 happy volunteers spent part of their day entering data to update our election records.
Most worked in the Association office in Hardwick, but due to broadband capacity a second offsite location – sanctioned by our Chairman, Ben Shelton – was set up to accommodate another group of helpers.
'Entering data' may not sound much of a fun job, but once everyone had got going, it's amazing how satisfying it became to complete a village street by street, so helping us to build a picture of likely voting intentions.
It was organised by Evelyne Spanner, a member of the Association's Management Team. She said: "A key element to winning elections is knowing who is going to vote for us. We find out by knocking on doors and asking – better known as canvassing.
"Equally important is to know who normally votes. Gone are the days when it was nearly everyone, especially in local elections where turn out is sometimes below 30% – a shockingly low percentage. But knowing who is likely to vote helps us to maximise our resources and today's exercise was to update our records.
"With some 60,000 households in South Cambs, it's quite a mammoth, but very worthwhile, task. There's still a way to go before this update is complete, so a few more days are planned and everyone who can come an help will be most welcome – the camaraderie is terrific... as was the lovely cake Sue Ellington provided!"
