Local residents are deeply concerned about plans to introduce a daily congestion charge of £5 to £50 across the whole of Cambridge. The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP), controlled by the Lib Dems and Labour, want to charge vehicles to drive within, into or out of Cambridge between 7am and 7pm, Mon - Fri. This even includes staff and patients travelling to Addenbrooke's.
The GCP claim this is the only way to pay for better public transport. That is simply not true.
Nowhere else in the UK charges drivers across an entire city in this way. There are better options. We need to tell the GCP loudly and clearly that enough is enough. People must not be punished for going about their everyday lives.
Under the Lib Dem and Labour plans, here's what you would pay:
Going to work? Pay £5 (£10 for a van)
Visiting an elderly relative? Pay £5
Doing a supermarket shop? Pay £5
Dropping a child at nursery? Pay £5
Going to hospital? Pay £5
Local Conservatives are united in opposition against the proposed charge.
