Government has a responsibility to strike a balance between freedom and security, in order to keep its citizens free from harm and protect the nation‟s traditions.
This is why the Conservative Party is committed to reversing the erosion of personal liberties the previous Labour Government oversaw.
Since entering Government, we have repealed authoritarian measures, restored historic civil liberties and bolstered the rights of individuals in the face of encroaching state power.
And, since 2010, we have scrapped ID cards and the National Identity Register, brought in the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 to roll back Labour‟s intrusions into the private sphere and introduced legislation to ensure laws covering such things as surveillance, stop-and-search and pre-charge detention do not breach an individual‟s right to personal liberty.
The security threats facing our country are wide-ranging and varied. The Conservative Party is committed to ensuring that the police and security agencies have the powers they need to respond to these threats, but at the same time making sure that we preserve the fundamental values of our nation that terrorists and serious criminals seek to undermine.
This CPF discussion brief is seeking your views on how the Party can continue to come down on the right side of this delicate line in the 2015 Parliament.
FUTURE MEETINGS
25 February 2014 – Local government
25 March 2014 – Employment
April 2014 – Policing
June 2014 – Art, culture and the Government
- Mark Howard is the Chairman of this group – Mark-Howard@uwclub.net. It meets regularly, usually at Hardwick, to discuss an issue put forward by Conservative Central Office.
Through the CPF, the Party is kept informed of Members’ opinions when deciding policy (unlike the Labour Party which appears only to take notice of its union paymasters).
The more Members attending, the more valid your arguments and views – so please do come and listen to the arguments and air your views. All SCCA members are automatically eligible to join the discussion.
If you are not currently on the CPF mailing list, please e-mail denise@sccf.org.uk ask for your name to be added.
