As part of a £30 billion infrastructure plan and the Coalition Government’s Growth Package to get the economy moving, Chancellor George Osborne has said that the Government will commit to improvements to the A14.
It will invest £20 million to support immediate improvements to relieve congestion on the A14 and to promote a project to improve its long-term capability through a ‘challenge’ by Spring 2012.
South Cambridgeshire MP Andrew Lansley, who has been campaigning to improve the A14 since he was first elected to Parliament nearly 15 years ago, has welcomed the Chancellor’s announcement.
“I very much welcome this new opportunity to get the A14 project going." he says. "It is now down to us to bring together a project which enables local traffic to move locally, freely and easily, while a toll road takes the burden of HGVs and long-distance traffic
"Over the coming months, I will be working with the County Council, the local Enterprise Partnership and my Parliamentary colleagues to see that this happens.
“The upgrade will be an enormous boost for the Cambridgeshire region and our local economy. Cambridge is one of the fastest growing regions in the country and boasts a hub of world-class enterprises and businesses, so opening access to them can only be a good thing.
"In addition, it will support local businesses, radically reduce congestion, improve safety and pave the way for new housing developments in the area, such as Northstowe, at a time where this is most needed”.
Joining Mr Lansley in welcoming the announcement, Cambridgeshire County Council Leader, Councillor Nick Clarke, said: “This Government has listened to our arguments and I am really pleased they have agreed with us that the road needs increased capacity and improved performance so that it can flow freely.”
