Six South Cambridgeshire residents are on the verge of scooping £100 cash prizes – but only if they keep recycling paper throughout January and February.
Waste bosses launched a competition at the end of November in a bid to boost the amount of paper being recycled in blue bin paper caddies this winter and winners have now been drawn.
To be eligible to collect the cash prize residents must continue to put paper in their caddies for collection until the end of February and council chiefs are reminding everyone who entered to make an extra effort to use their paper caddies.
To enter the competition a form was cut out in South Cambs Magazine, the quarterly residents’ magazine from South Cambridgeshire District Council, as an incentive to get people into the paper recycling habit.
Since launching blue bin collections in October 2010, the amount of waste the Council has sent to landfill has dropped, reducing its annual service costs by around half a million pounds. This has helped fund other services and keep Council Tax down.
Paper recycling in the blue bin paper caddy plays a big part in generating income as it can be sold at a higher price and reprocessed back into new premium quality newsprint.
Cash prizes have been donated by competition sponsors AmeyCespa and Aylesford Newsprint with runners-up being offered the chance to take a trip to Aylesford Newsprint’s Paper Mill in Kent.
Cllr Sue Ellington, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member in charge of waste and recycling, said: “We’re putting residents on red alert that they could have scooped a cash prize so please make sure you don’t fall at the final hurdle and keep using your paper caddies.
"Paper plays such an important role for us as when it is recycled using the paper caddy it can be sold for a premium price. We’re asking everyone to kick start the New Year by resolving to recycle as much as possible so we can see our impressive rates increase.”
The winners and runners-up will be notified by 1 March and announced in the summer edition of South Cambs Magazine.
