With Simon Crocker winning the Bourn ward SCDC by-election last week, the ward is back to top strength again with its full quota of three District Councillors – all Conservative.
"Because Simon's predecessor is working abroad, and has been for some time, the ward was effectively down to two members instead of three," said Ray Manning, the Leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council.
"Once it became clear he would not be able to fulfil his duties as a District Councillor, he resigned, which triggered the by-election on 17 September."
"I'm delighted Simon won, of course, not least because as Chairman of Cambourne Parish Council, he brings considerable parish council expertise to SCDC," he added.
Today was the first SCDC council meeting since Simon was elected. "Although a new boy, I felt quite at home, even in the more formal atmosphere of the SCDC council chamber – probably down to years of attending parish council and many other 'official' meetings," he said.
"But what I'm really looking forward to is working with colleagues within SCDC and the County Council to be an effective District Councillor."
"I want to carry through the promises I made during the election campaign, particularly getting the NHS to provide more funding for extra staff at the medical centre in Cambourne and ensuring the proposed West Cambourne development, if it goes ahead, and the A428 dualling are for the benefit of everyone living locally."
The ward comprises the villages of Bourn, Cambourne, Caxton, Croxton and Eltisley and is solidly Conservative: Mervyn Loynes and Des O'Brien, the other two District Councillors in the ward are both Conservative; Mervyn is also County Councillor for three of the five villages and Mandy Smith, County Councillor for the other two, is also Conservative.
