Kevin Cuffley won the Sawston ward in the District Council by-election for the Conservatives tonight with more than twice as many votes as second placed UKIP. Labour were third and the Lib Dems, with only 10 per cent of the vote, fourth.
Kevin joins David Bard and Raymond Matthews as the third Conservative District Councillor in Sawston – David is also the Chairman of the Council. Sawston is also represented at the County Council by two Conservatives: Gail Kenney and Tony Orgee.
The results were:
Kevin Cuffley – Conservative 477 (46.3%)
Michael Thomas Kilpatrick – Liberal Democrat 110 (10.7%)
Mike Nettleton – Labour 199 (19.3%)
Elizabeth Jane Smith – UK Independence 233 (22.6%)
Votes cast: 1,030 (18.83% turnout)
Spoilt papers 11
The election was caused by the resignation of Sally Hatton, an independent.
Kevin's win means the number of Conservatives at South Cambridgeshire District Council has increased from 33 to 34 – the Lib Dems have 14 members, Independents eight and Labour one, giving the Conservatives a majority of 11. On 4 May 2011, we had a majority of just one.
"You have done us proud, well done all," said Ray Manning, Leader of the Council – a view echoed by many others on the night, for it was a hard fought campaign, led by Ben Shelton, Colin Barker and David Bard, enthusiastically backed, as always, by Stephen Frost and Denise Smith at the Hardwick office.
Ben Shelton is a District Councillor for The Shelfords & Stapleford and the SCCA's Vice Chairman Political. "It was a classic election campaign based on good strategy, good understanding of the ward, a local candidate and, most important of all – hard graft by a lot of dedicated people," he said. "Winning was never considered a foregone conclusion."
Kevin and his many helpers delivered three sets of leaflets to the 3,042 homes in Sawston (or as near as makes no difference) and knocked on over 1,500 doors to talk to residents.
"Kevin was such a hard working candidate," said Colin Barker. "Rarely, if ever, have I seen a candidate take to electioneering like Kevin. He worked his socks off, and deserves the fantastic win we achieved tonight."
"A huge 'thank you' to everyone who helped me during the campaign," said Kevin "Be it delivery, canvassing or telling, it was a real team effort and just goes to prove with the Conservative team, nothing is impossible."
