Local Conservatives are campaigning to save South Cambs from the Lib Dem District Council’s destructive plans to swamp our region with an additional 49,000 flats and houses.
Our local water supply is drawn from an underground chalk aquifer and over-abstraction due to rapid development is already causing our streams and ponds to dry up, destroying rare habitats for wildlife. Despite this, the Lib Dem District Council is planning to build 53% more houses than the government has suggested, creating a huge additional demand for water, but with no plan about how to replenish the aquifer.
Anthony Browne MP, who is leading the Conservative campaign against overdevelopment in South Cambs said “Water is a massive problem for our area, but the regional scale solutions we need to tackle this, including a new reservoir, will not be delivered until the mid-2030’s at the earliest.
"It beggars belief that the Lib Dems are choosing to ignore this reality and plan to build a completely unsustainable number of new homes, far in excess of the government’s expectations. I am urging them to scale back their plans rather than taking a huge environmental gamble with our water resources.”
Cllr Heather Williams, leader of the Conservative group at the District Council said "This number of houses, using an average of 80 litres per day, means over a billion extra litres of water would be needed every year. If the housing numbers were lower, the water demand would also significantly reduce. For the Lib Dems to pass the buck when so many extra houses are being proposed is unacceptable."
If implemented, this Local Plan could cause irreparable water issues for generations to come.
