A cash boost of £2,350 has been awarded to the Wildlife Trust to help give three local woodlands of national importance a new lease of life.
The grant from South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Wildlife Enhancement Scheme will pay for coppicing to take place at Gamlingay Wood, Hardwick Wood and Hayley Wood, near Little Gransden, where young branches are cut back to allow light to generate new growth.
Regular maintenance of woodlands encourages flowers to grow and brings more wildlife such as butterflies which makes it a more enjoyable place for residents to visit. All three woods are open to the public.
Wildlife Trust volunteers will also be teaming up with staff in late February to carry out the work.
Cllr Ray Manning, Leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Woodlands are an integral part of the district and we are delighted to be able to support the work that is being carried out.
"By maintaining our woodlands we protect our heritage for future generations, make them a haven for wildlife and local people.”
