Conservative majority at SCDC now 11
South Cambridgeshire’s newest Conservative District Councillor, Lynda Harford, joined the Party after leaving the Liberal Democrats last week.
Lynda who represents the Cottenham ward is s very happy to join fellow councillors, Simon Edwards and Tim Wotherspoon with whom she has always worked closely.
“We have always worked well as a team for the good of all the residents of Cottenham, Oakington & Westwick and Rampton", said Lynda.
"I know this will continue. It will always be about making sure our communities are well represented and their views heard”.
Lynda formally joined the Conservative Group at the main Council meeting last Thursday (26th July). Speaking after the meeting, Conservative Leader Ray Manning said “I am pleased to welcome Lynda to our group. She is a hardworking Councillor who is very well respected”.
Lynda met with the Association agent Stephen Frost and secretary Denise Smith at a visit to the Harwick office on Tuesday.
And at the same time that Lynda left the Lib Dems to join us, so District Councillor Edd Stonham, who represented Histon and Impington for the Lib Dems, decided to become an independent.
In its report in the Cambridge News, the Liberal Democrat leader, Cllr Sebastian Kindersley, said: “It will be a devastating blow to the group because Lynda Harford is an extremely good councillor. We will miss them both and wish them both well."
As a result of these changes, the make up of SCDC has swung even more decisively towards the Conservatives, whose overall majority has increased from nine to 11; prior to the SCDC elections in May 2012, the Lib Dems had 18 seats – now they have only 14.
The current composition of the Council [4 May to 26 July 2012 in brackets] is:
Conservatives 34 seats (33).
Liberal Democrats 14 seats (16 – it was 18 until the SCSC elections in May).
Independent councillors 8 seats (7).
Labour 1 seat (1).
