New faces have been announced as part of South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Cabinet team after two councillors stepped down.
Cllr Ray Manning, Leader of the Council, has announced Cllr Mick Martin (Duxford ward) will be taking up Cabinet responsibility for environmental services by standing down from chairing the Civic Affairs Committee, and Shelfords and Stapleford local member Cllr David Whiteman-Downes is to take on responsibility for the corporate and customer services portfolio.
Cllr Manning has said the new appointments would add a fresh dynamic to the Cabinet and paid tribute to Cllrs Sue Ellington and James Hockney who recently informed him they could no longer continue their Cabinet roles.
Cllr Hockney has stood down due to time commitments needed to complete his law degree while also running his own business and Cllr Ellington has taken the decision to stand down so she is eligible to put her name forward for the role of vice-chairman at the Council’s annual meeting later this month.
Cllr Ray Manning, said: “Sue and James have both worked incredibly hard as part of the Cabinet team and I am very grateful for their service.
"They will be sorely missed but we are fortunate to have another two dedicated councillors who have the skill, energy and passion to step into their shoes and deliver on residents’ priorities at a time when funding for local government is stretched more than ever before.
"We are very committed to continuing our excellent track record of providing value for money and high quality services for residents and one of our top priorities is to support businesses to help create new jobs and boost the economy.”
Cllr Sue Ellington will continue to work alongside Cllr Mick Martin on the health and wellbeing part of the portfolio and will remain the vice-chairman of the Cambridgeshire Health and Wellbeing Board.
The new eight-strong Cabinet line-up is:
Cllr Ray Manning (leader)
Cllr Simon Edwards (deputy leader, finance and staffing)
Cllr Mick Martin (environmental services)
Cllr Mark Howell (housing)
Cllr Tim Wotherspoon (Northstowe)
Cllr Pippa Corney (planning policy and localism)
Cllr Nick Wright (planning and economic development)
Cllr David Whiteman-Downes (corporate and customer services)
Both Cllrs Hockney and Ellington will continue to be local councillors for their villages on the Council.
Papers have been published today for the Council’s annual meeting being held on 23 May where councillors will be asked to agree a new partnerships review committee to scrutinise external and partnership issues while the existing scrutiny committee will focus on being a watchdog for decisions made by the Council.
Councillors will also consider proposals to cease the sustainable energy committee with discussions and reports in future being presented to the Leader’s portfolio holders meetings.
