Nominations open for District and Parish Council elections
Anyone wanting to stand for a seat at the next District and Parish Council elections in May is being urged to step forward now and pick up a nomination pack from South Cambridgeshire District Council.
A third of the seats for councillors on the District Council are up for grabs on Thursday 3 May – 19 in total – with a further 30 parish councils across South Cambridgeshire also electing councillors on the same day.
In general, anyone who is over 18 years old and registered to vote in South Cambridgeshire, or has lived, worked or owned property in the district for at least 12 months can stand for election.
Elected District Councillors each serve for four years at a time and candidates can stand for election as part of a political party, by speaking to the appropriate party directly, or as an independent candidate. Nominations must also be supported by ten people from within the ward in which a candidate is seeking election.
Completed nomination forms must be returned to South Cambridgeshire District Council’s elections team between Wednesday 28 March and noon on Wednesday 4 April. Nominations received after this date and time cannot be accepted.
To make sure residents can have their say in the elections on Thursday 3 May they are also being reminded to make sure they are registered to vote. If you still need to register to vote please visit the Electoral Commission’s website.
District Councillors receive an allowance of £4,627 for carrying out their role representing their area each year. More information about the role of a councillor and standing for election can also be found on the SCDC website.
Jean Hunter, South Cambridgeshire District Council chief executive, said: “Councillors are ordinary people with jobs, families and outside interests – but they have stood for election to help represent their area and make sure residents’ views are heard.
"They work hard to represent the interests of the local community as well as having a say on decisions for the district as a whole. Being a councillor is very rewarding and if you are interested in being part of making things happen in your area I would urge you to pick up a nomination pack now to find out more.”
