With the 2018 District Council election due on 3rd May, here's the fifth in our series about the Conservative candidates by the candidates.
Irene Bloomfield and Mike Linnette both live in Melbourn and are standing for the Melbourn ward – a 'two-seater'. As a result of the boundary changes which take effect from next May, the ward will undergo a significant change with the District Councillors representing an almost entirely different set of villages: Melbourn, Meldreth, Shepreth and Whaddon (currently the villages are Great Chishill, Heydon, Little Chishill – which become part of the new Foxton ward – and Melbourn; at present they are represented by Councillor Val Barrett, who is retiring in May after 14 years service as a District Councillor).
Irene and Mike have both lived in Melbourn for over 20 years – and between them have over 50 years of commercial administration and management experience.
Here's what they have to say.
Irene Bloomfield
"I've worked in administration posts most of my working life, involved in personnel, account ledger work and wages, procurement and shipping goods and equipment throughout the world for the oil industry."I moved to Melbourn in 1998 and joined Melbourn Village College as the lead for the Contract Cleaning Services on behalf of the County Council – I'm now Site Manager at the Village College.
"I'm an active member of the Royal British Legion Ladies Section for Melbourn & District, (Vice Chair)."
Mike Linnette
"I'm a former Royal Marine; before retiring, I was export department manager and director of a chemical compounds manufacturing company based in Ware."I've travelled throughout the world establishing distribution centres and training staff, establishing a good report and trust with clients based thousands of miles away."
As a team...
Both Irene and Mike are former Melbourn Parish Councillors and were fully involved with many of the Parish Council's projects over the past ten years, including Chairs and Vice Chairs of various committees and involvement in the new cemetery, Stockbridge Meadows, the BMX freestyle track, the Hub Community Centre, the upgrade of the Community Sports Pavilion and the new car park."Our aim," they say, "is to maintain and improve facilities and services in our villages.
"Our priorities will be:
- Affordable homes for young people.
- Care for senior citizens.
- The improvement of education and leisure facilities for the next generation.
"Above all, honesty and integrity is of the utmost importance to us."
