Prime Minister Theresa May writes:
There’s a General Election going on. It’s a crucial election where can secure strong and stable leadership our country needs to see us through Brexit and beyond and lock in the economic progress we have made together by backing Theresa May and local Conservatives.
Delivering this kind of certainty is extremely important – and it’s the kind of thing we need at a local level here in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough when we elect a Mayor for the first time on 4th May.
People across the region have been telling the local Conservatives what they want the new Mayor to deliver for them. Whether it’s building more homes without sacrificing green spaces, making sure every young person gets the education that’s right for them or improving our roads and transport network.
Electing a new Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is a chance for the whole area to get the changes it needs. That’s because whoever is elected from whichever party, they will have control over millions of pounds of investment over the coming years.
They will need to work across the region to deliver the homes, transport links and skills the local community needs to thrive – not just in Cambridge, but in Peterborough, Fenland and across Cambridgeshire. And they will need to work with the government I lead and with local councils to meet the challenges local people face.
That’s why the Conservative candidate, James Palmer, is the best person for the job.
- James has lived in Cambridgeshire all his life and he cares about the local area. As a dad, James knows just how daunting life can be for too many of our young people – whether it’s affording university fees or getting a foot on the housing ladder.
- As a local businessmen James is well aware of the challenges faced by employers who want to create more jobs for people in our area.
- And as the leader of East Cambridgeshire council for the last four years, James knows what it takes to get things done.
Not voting for James means risking a Labour Mayor, backed by Jeremy Corbyn, running the whole of the region – or a Lib Dem candidate fixated with Donald Trump and Brexit – and missing the opportunity to deliver the changes Cambridgeshire and Peterborough needs.
The election of a new Mayor is a huge opportunity for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough at a time of great national change. You can seize that opportunity by electing James Palmer on Thursday 4 May.
