Electors in Sawston go to the polls today in a District Council by-election – and there's only one local candidate standing: the Conservative's Kevin Cuffley, who lives in Dale Way Sawston. Kevin is also the village cobbler.
He’s worked and resided in Sawston since 1978 and is happily married with three children, who all went to Icknield School and Sawston Village College.
Kevin is also an active member of Sawston Parish Council – and, besides being the village cobbler, he runs South Cambs Household Services, a window cleaning business.
Residents can cast their vote at the polling station in the Free Church Hall, Sawston High Street, up to 10.00 pm this evening. Votes will be counted after the polling station closes.
Your big concerns
“Having a shop in the High Street means I’m always talking to residents and discussing their concerns about Sawston,” he says.
“Top spot at the moment is the proposed major housing developments in Babraham Road and Dales Manor Business Park where in all 540 homes could be built – most of you don’t like the idea and I totally agree as they’re out of scale for Sawston and threaten the existing character of the village.
“Other issues include illegal parking, which seems to be getting worse, more retail outlets needed to save you going to Shelford or Cambridge, better facilities in the High Street and the state of some of our pathways and roads. Plenty to do then!
Kevin Cuffley – a local committed to Sawston
“I hold the best interests of Sawston at heart and with your support, we can keep the integrity of our village intact.
“We're very fortunate to have four excellent local councillors in David Bard and Raymond Matthews, for the District, and for the County Gail Kenney and Tony Orgee – they do a really first class job of standing up for Sawston.
SCDC – well run under the Conservatives
“SCDC has been really well run since the Conservatives took control six years ago, so voting for me this Thursday to become your third District Councillor means you’ll have another strong local voice looking after your interests.”
For the record, this by-election was caused by the resignation of Sally Hatton.
