Only 26% of food waste produced in South Cambridgeshire is going in green bins for composting, even though all food waste, including uncooked and cooked meat, plate scrapings and vegetable peelings, is accepted. When some of our residents told us they didn't like to recycle food waste because it was difficult to sort out in the kitchen and then take out to the green bin, we offered kitchen caddies to put food waste in. A limited supply of kitchen caddies are available for residents to collect from South Cambridgeshire Hall in Cambourne.
While it is fine to put food waste directly into the kitchen caddy, some residents have asked about liners. Unfortunately, not all liners can be composted, even if they are biodegradable (e.g. starch).
The good news is that we have teamed up with a supplier who will deliver compostable paper liners direct to your door from as little as £7.50 (for 25 bags).
The paper liners are:
- 100% biodegradable and compostable
- A totally natural product
- They cannot be confused with any plastic liner
- The sacks are made from waste: the shavings from trees used in the timber industry
- Completely environmentally friendly
- From a totally sustainable source
- The paper can 'breathe', reducing odour, leachate and weight, unlike bio-plastics
- Waterproofed paper is used to dramatically reduce any wetness.
