The Conservatives won two more seats in the South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) elections held yesterday and now have a majority of five – up from a majority of just one before the election.
We took Duxford from the Lib Dems, where Mick Martin won, and, likewise, Caroline Hunt won Teversham.
Elsewhere, Tim Wotherspoon held Cottenham, Brian Burling held Willingham and Over, David Bard held Sawston, David Whiteman-Downes became the new councillor for Shelfords and Stapleford, Nick Wright held Papworth and Elsworth, Tony Orgee held The Abingtons, Alison Elcox, another new councillor, won Bourn, Richard Barrett held Balsham, Ted Ridgway Watt, a fifth new councillor, won in Orwell and Barrington, Francis Burkitt retained Barton and Roger Hall held his seat in Bar Hill.
The new line-up at SCDC is:
Conservatives 31 seats.
Lib Dems 18 seats.
Independents 7 seats.
Labour 1 seat.
During the count yesterday, the Cambridge News commented “Sebastian Kindersley's claim last year that the Lib Dems were in pole position to take control of SCDC looks unlikely to become reality.” He was not at the count.
