Over 130 people packed an event yesterday [9 February] to hear how they could save energy and money by improving their homes.
At the Warm Homes event at the ACE Foundation in Stapleford, homeowners heard from local installers of insulation, solar panels, heat pumps and energy efficient boilers about how the Government’s Green Deal* could help them to access grants to get the work done and saw practical demonstrations on what they can do for themselves at little cost.
The free event, organised by Stapleford Environment Group with the support of South Cambridgeshire District Council, also gave visitors the opportunity to tour the venue to find out how the ACE Foundation is saving energy.
Stapleford Environment Group hosted the event in conjunction with the Sustainable Parish Energy Partnership. The Partnership, which was set up in 2009, now boasts a network of 27 parish councils and volunteer groups in South Cambridgeshire working to reduce energy bills, tackle climate change and build a more sustainable future in villages.
South Cambridgeshire District Council supports the partnership to organise events and initiatives including village energy shows, home energy thermal image surveys, working with local businesses, community energy generating projects, village lift sharing and local sustainability information booklets.
Cllr Ray Manning, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Leader and portfolio holder for climate change, said: “The turnout on Saturday shows why we must continue to help communities save money on their fuel bills.
"Fuel is a becoming a more and more significant cost and sometimes cheap and simple changes can help people stay warm and comfortable in their homes while also cutting their spending.”
* From October 2012, the Government’s Green Deal policy means many energy efficiency and renewable energy measures can be installed in homes and businesses at no upfront cost with works being paid for out of savings on the energy bill.
