A flag is being flown over South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Cambourne offices to mark Commonwealth Day.

The flag was raised by the Council’s Chairman, Cllr David Bard, at 10am today (Monday 10 March) as the Council joins over 500 local authorities, community groups an charities across the country marking the occasion.

This year’s theme for the annual event is #TeamCommonwealth, which expresses the spirit of friendship and motivation towards the shared goals and values that exist between Commonwealth members.

Cllr Bard read out a message of 'good wishes' from Her Majesty The Queen, along with a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation.

Commonwealth Day is an opportunity to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation and the work of Commonwealth organisations, which aim to improve the lives of citizens.

Her Majesty The Queen also 'breaks' the Commonwealth flag outside the Great West Door of Westminster Abbey on Commonwealth Day. This will be the last Commonwealth flag raised on the largest, single raising of this flag in the history of the Commonwealth.

Charity teams will mark the day by taking Commonwealth Flags to the top of the UK’s four highest National Peaks – Scafell Pike in England, Ben Nevis in Scotland, Mount Snowdon in Wales, and Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland.

Cllr David Bard, Chairman of South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “We are proud to fly the flag and join people and countries across the Commonwealth in celebrating the spirit of this special day.

"It is a timely point for us to reflect on how we serve our communities and make them a better place to live, work and study."
