A unique new bus which pulls a bike trailer behind it was launched by South Cambs District Council yesterday, 27 July.
With over 30 seats and room for 20 bikes, the bus will run on Sundays and bank holidays, departing four times-a-day from Cambridge railway station to Gamlingay and back, with a loop from Gamlingay to Waresley, the Gransdens and Longstowe.
The idea of the service is to encourage people to visit the countryside and bring their bikes – although you don't have to have a bike to use the bus.
Anyone can use the BusBike to be dropped off at any of the stops on the route... and use their concessionary passes.
Bikes can be loaded at most of the bus stops – Station Road, Brooklands Avenue and Newnham in Cambridge and Barton, Orwell, Wimpole Estate, Arrington, Croydon, Hatley St George, Gamlingay Waresley, Great Gransden and Longstowe.
Each time the bus departs from Cambridge, it will follow the route in alternate directions around the 'Gamlingay loop' so passengers can travel from, say, the Hatleys to Gamlingay and back – emphasising one of the key benefits of the service: a Sunday bus for local people.
Tickets can be bought on the bus and riders can hop on and off all day to use their bikes to sightsee. Tickets can also be bought at the Cambridge Tourist Information Centre in the Guildhall.
Cllr Simon Edwards, Deputy Leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “What better time to launch this unique service than the year the Tour de France has visited the area?
"People often say they want to get out and explore what the countryside has to offer and we hope the BikeBus removes the barriers for them.
"There is so much to offer in the district, from popular tourist attractions such as the Wimpole Estate to ancient woodlands and historic villages with their charming pubs.”
