Councillor Val Barrett is the Conservative candidate for Great Chishill, Heydon, Little Chishill and Melbourn in the SCDC election on 5th May.
Val has been your Councillor for ten years – she is also a Trustee of several Melbourn Charities, and is a member of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group – SCDC is currently asking for comments on Melbourn becoming a ‘Neighbourhood Area’.
Val and her husband, Rob, have lived in Melbourn for almost forty years. Among her many activities is being chairman of the Melbourn Mobile Warden Scheme.
She continues to work with her fellow-councillor for Melbourn, saying “I believe in co-operation for the good of the village.”
Local action by Val Barrett on your behalf
"The Grinnel Hill BMX trail has been a resounding success. I would like to pay tribute to the late Janice Guest who was instrumental, along with myself, in first getting this idea off the ground,” says Val.
”BMX experts are coming from all over Europe and America to experience the thrills and challenges these jumps have to offer.
”I would also like to thank the Parish Council for their continued support for this wonderful facility.
”The Parish Council’s new offices are in the Melbourn Community Hub – where you can go for light refreshments or lunch. And while there, please do make use of the library.
"I am involved in Celebrating Ages in which, twice a year, the young people of the village serve a lunch or afternoon tea to our senior residents, thus bringing the two groups together so they can more readily understand each other’s point of view.”
Taking a stand
"I enjoy working with the Parish Councils of Great and Little Chishill, and also Heydon. Being two of the southernmost villages in South Cambs, they are somewhat unique in character and composition. I will work to ensure that does not change," says Val.
"At SCDC, planning remains the main bone of contention. In New Road, there is a speculative development for almost 200 houses. I am not against building homes, but they must be sustainable.
"With the current agreed development taking place in Melbourn, I feel a development such as this will be too much for local services to cope with.”
