Out of the 19 seats being contested in the South Cambridgeshire District Council election on 5th May, the Conservatives had ten winners – more than the rest of the other parties put together.
For three years out of four, 19 of the 57 SCDC councillors have to face the electorate. This year, all the councillors representing seats in the Association's area of South Cambridgeshire retained them (as did those in South East Cambridgeshire).
Sadly, we didn't make any gains, despite the incredibly hard work and personal effort put in by Alison Elcox (Gamlingay ward), Lina Joseph (Haslingfield and The Eversdens), Gina Youens (Hauxton and Harston) and Heather Williams (The Mordens) in South Cambs and Alan Shipp (Waterbeach) and Enid Bald (Linton) in South East Cambs. Reality in the months leading up to the election indicated we would never win in three other seats, so we deliberately put up minimal opposition to save our resources for potentially winnable ones. It is politics – and democracy.
It does mean our majority on the council has dropped from 17 to 15 – still very healthy compared to ten years ago when there was no overall majority. We like to think residents of South Cambridgeshire have benefitted from Conservative control at the Council.
Our ten winners this year – eight from South Cambridgeshire and two from South east Cambs:
- Mervyn Loynes / Bourn ward – Bourn, Cambourne, Caxton, Croxton and Eltisley.
- Simon Edwards / Cottenham ward – Cottenham, Oakington, Rampton and Westwick.
- Alex Riley / Longstanton ward – Longstanton.
- Val Barrett / Melbourn ward – Great Chishill, Heydon, Little Chishill and Melbourn.
- Mark Howell / Papworth & Elsworth ward – Conington, Elsworth, Fen Drayton, Graveley, Knapwell, Papworth Everard and Papworth St Agnes
- Kevin Cuffley / Sawston ward – Sawston.
- Charlie Nightingale / The Shelfords & Stapleford ward – Great Shelford, Little Shelford, Newton and Stapleford.
- Peter Topping / Whittlesford ward – Heathfield, Thriplow and Whittlesford.
