South Cambridgeshire's paper only caddy, introduced as part of the new blue wheelie bin scheme last year, has seen an increase in the quantity and quality of paper collected.
According to Aylesford Newsprint, which recycle's SCDC's paper, around 6,000 tonnes a year of paper is being recycled – an increase over the pre-caddy period. Over the lifetime of the five year contract, approximately 30,000 tonnes of paper will be collected and recycled, creating over 4,000 tonnes of newsprint a year.
The company also reports that the quality of the paper being recycled has also improved.
Cllr Sue Ellington, portfolio holder for environmental services said "When the blue bin scheme was introduced last year, a paper only caddy was included – this sits inside the blue bin to hold the paper separately, maintaining a high quality of paper for recycling.
"Not only does this make life easier for our residents to recycle, but as a result the materials being sold to reprocessing companies are much cleaner and higher quality.
"This is excellent news and we'd like to thank all our residents – however there is still great potential to increase the amounts of paper being recycled as 10 per cent is still being put in the black bin."
