The inaugural David Cameron Challenge Cup competition ended in a draw – after four hours of entertaining cricket (and a rather nice tea break).
The friendly match between the President's XI and the Chairman's XI at Elsworth recreation ground on Saturday was only spoilt by rain (the first for several weeks) – although it took some time before it made the wicket too slippery to bat on.
First in, with the advantage of starting in the dry, were the President's XI who scored 144 for nine in their 30 overs limit. By 3.15 it was beginning to rain quite hard and although it stopped during the tea interval, it began in earnest once the Chairman's XI were at the crease – even so, they were 69 for four with 20 overs left when, sensibly, the captains called it a day.
Despite that, the first South Cambridgeshire Conservative Association Fun Day was just that: enjoyable and memorable. Many thanks to Heather Williams, Penny Brown and their team of helpers who made it happen, made a terrific tea and, seemingly, hundreds of cakes.
Ah, cakes! Not to be overlooked was the other competition – the Great Conservative Bake-Off: seven cakes vied to win a bottle of something sparkling... which Heather Williams deservedly won.
Our photos:
- The remarkable youngsters from the Corben and Calder families who played for the President's XI (Dorothy Calder MBE, left in the photo, is their granny – and SCCA President): Max, aged 8, and Maddie, 11, Corben and Toby, 16, and Alice, 14, Calder with Bill Potter, SCCA Chairman. David McCraith and Simon Lee look on.

- Cricket in England – a good game, even when it rains.
And to finish the day off, there was an auction of the Bake-Off cakes, with Heather's prize cake fetching a well deserved £15, Penny's £10 (paid by a very loyal Andrew Brown), £5 for Denise's cake and £4 for Alison Elcox's Death by Chocolate.
