With the 2018 District Council election due on 3rd May, here's the fourth in our series about the Conservative candidates by the candidates.
Sue lives in Swavesey and is standing for the Swavesey ward. As a result of the boundary changes which take effect from next May, Swavesey will be enlarged from a single village to include Fen Drayton, Lolworth and Swavesey.
Here's why Sue is standing.
"I am so proud to have represented Swavesey for 12 years and am looking forward to being able to represent Fen Drayton and Lolworth with the same enthusiasm and determination if I am elected in May 2018.
I have lived in Swavesey parish since I was four years old, but as we lived at Hill Farm, I crossed the A14 (previously A604) to go to Lolworth Primary School. We moved into Market Street in 1960 and settled here after my marriage in 1967. I love the community spirit which is found in villages and I became a councillor in order to encourage and enhance that spirit.
I worked at Papworth Hospital during the first heart transplant years and developed the first graduate nurse training programme. I was a nurse teacher before becoming Chief Nurse in Bedfordshire and Inspected Nursing Homes. This background has prepared me to represent South Cambridgeshire District Council on the Cambridgeshire Health and Wellbeing Board for the last six years and the Health Committee of the County Council which scrutinises health services.
I was Chairman of the District Council for the fixed term of two years from 2015 to 2017 and am now Cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing.
My current mission is to find ways of helping people in South Cambs who are lonely. This presents challenges as every village has its own unique issues, assets and personalities – but I have a plan which is just being rolled out. So watch this space.
I am particularly concerned about:
- The growth in housing numbers which will see primary school children having to bus further afield.
- The lack of provision for enlarging or moving the doctor’s surgery in Swavesey to meet the demands of up to 500 more homes.
- The need to absorb new residents into the community in which they live.
- The lack of public transport.
I am interested in getting to know all the concerns affecting the people of Fen Drayton, Lolworth and Swavesey and working with them to maintain their community, enhance their facilities and achieving better health and wellbeing services for all.
Between now and the election I will be walking the villages, attending village events and seeking to learn more about the issues – so, if you want to meet or raise an issue, my contact details are below."
