Councillors Tim Scott and Lina Joseph are the Conservative candidates for the new Harston & Comberton ward in the South Cambridgeshire District Council elections on 3rd May 2018 – a 'two-seater' taking in the villages of Barton, Comberton, Coton, Grantchester, Harlton, Haslingfield, Harston, Hauxton and South Trumpington. Lina lives in Haslingfield and Tim in Comberton – Lina is the County Councillor for the Hardwick division and Tim the District Councillor for Comberton.

They are aghast at the plans for new busway – it will destroy valuable farmland and shatter forever the tranquillity of villages and homes in its path. Far more sensible is to make much better use of the existing infrastructure.

"We are fortunate to have good shops and other excellent amenities in our villages, as here in Haslingfield. Please use them regularly – we don’t want to lose them,” say Councillors Tim Scott and Lina Joseph.

With the 2018 District Council election due on 3rd May, here's the sixth in our series about the Conservative candidates by the candidates.

Lina Joseph lives in Haslingfield and Tim Scott in Comberton. They are standing for the new ward of Harston & Comberton – a 'two-seater' taking in the villages of Barton, Comberton, Coton, Grantchester, Harlton, Haslingfield, Harston, Hauxton and South Trumpington.

Lina is the County Councillor for the Hardwick division and Tim the District Councillor for Comberton.

Here's what they have to say.

Lina Joseph
“I live in Haslingfield with Guy, my husband, and our two sons – Gabriel, who attends the local school, and Raphael. I'm passionate about my community, improving people's lives and giving a voice to those who don't have one.

My main interests are education, environment and mental health. I have recently been appointed Mental Health Champion for the County Council.

I've been working on tackling domestic abuse and sexual violence and making sure, as an authority, the County is ready to respond to modern slavery and human trafficking.

At a local level, I've been getting potholes filled, roads resurfaced, footpaths improved and supporting local businesses with signage – and making sure my parishes have a flooding emergency plan. I've also been visiting my local schools and businesses.

Another key area has been offering advice to local groups and residents on how to obtain funding and starting up a community project – do get in touch if you have an idea in mind which will improve the lives of your neighbours.

Local government is in the optimum position for real change. As a County Councillor looking also to be a District Councillor, I will encourage officers to transform the way we do things and challenge if appropriate, as I do at Shire Hall.

Through Councillors like myself and Tim, it is an opportunity for communities to lead the way, how they want to live and what they want from the local authority.

"Let me introduce myself – I'm a farmer from Comberton. All of my DNA is associated with the eight villages in the new Harston & Comberton ward, whether it be from my mother who was born in Button End, Harston (opposite the cemetery) or even as a stalwart playing football for Barton and Haslingfield over many years.

Closer to home, I farm the land owned by the Countryside Restoration Trust at Barton, whose land extends to the parishes of Comberton, Coton, Grantchester and Haslingfield.

I currently serve as a parish councillor for Comberton and, for many years, was a parish councillor for Barton where I use to live.

My passion is for wildlife and the environment and I recently became SCDC Environmental Champion, of which I am very proud.

In my current District Councillor capacity, I have sat on two select committees – one looking at tackling social isolation and the other trying to promote rural businesses in our villages.

My wish is for our villages to remain rural and with vibrant communities."
