Join Wenlock and Mandeville at Olympic celebration
South Cambridgeshire will be hosting its biggest Olympic celebration on Sunday 15 July when Milton Country Park will be brought to life with music, sport, art and entertainment. Even the official London 2012 mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville, will be making a special guest appearance.
The mascots will lead the parade at 3.30 pm and join residents in a range of activities to help build excitement ahead of the upcoming games.
Activities will range from fishing, kayaking, sailing, canoeing, waterwalking and paddleboarding, to disc golf, trampolining, climbing, archery, fencing and orienteering. There will also be an inflatable assault course and dedicated sports zone with special Olympic challenge and family races.
If that wasn’t enough, there will be an arts area with workshops in puppet making, music, and circus skills as well as a music stage with street poetry and comedy acts.
New for Park Life this special year is a range of activities in The Wild Place – a secure woodland area within the park – that will be open for children and families, including den building, outdoor cooking and fire lighting.
For residents looking at ways to get active in 2012, a visit to the fitness tent is a must. As well as challenging your family and friends on the rowing machines, you can get your blood pressure checked and find out about our popular Walk and Run for Fun scheme.
Fitness instructors from South Cambridgeshire’s Healthy and Active 4 Life exercise referral scheme will also be on hand to give advice to those looking to return to a more active lifestyle, and to provide information about local sports centres and clubs.
Having taken all that in, visitors will be ready for a well-earned refreshing smoothie, which they are invited to make themselves by choosing some ingredients and pedalling as fast as they can on the smoothie bike.
Organised by South Cambridgeshire District Council, in partnership with Cambridge Sport Lakes Trust, the event will run throughout the day, from 11am to 6pm, and is entirely free.
South Cambridgeshire District Council’s member champion for the Olympics, Cllr James Hockney, said: “We’re very excited to welcome the official London 2012 mascots to South Cambridgeshire on their journey to the Games. They will join the thousands who attend Park Life every year, and this year’s promises to be the biggest and best yet.
"It follows our four year, district-wide programme of activities to celebrate the upcoming Games and to inspire and motivate people to get involved in sport.
“We hope these activities will deliver a lasting legacy for London 2012 by providing opportunities for people to experience new things, but also by improving health and well-being and creating community involvement opportunities.”
