Conservative Policy Forum discussion – Global Britain
The Conservative Policy Forum is a national party group which gives local party members the opportunity to discuss the major policy challenges facing Britain.
Do you wish you had real input on Government policy? If so, come to our CPF discussion, where the focus this time is on...
- Global Britain.
- Date Thursday, 31st January 2019.
- Time 7.15 for 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm.
- Venue Foxton Village Hall, Hardman Road, Foxton, CB22 6RN. Map.
What should Britain’s role be in the world? How can we maximise our soft power through our aid, trade, and security commitments? How can we make ourselves safer and create more trade in a dangerous world.
Key questions will include
- What should a Conservative-led UK Government seek to achieve in the world?
- What is the UK’s unique selling point as a global player, and what should our commitments be to other countries?
- What should be the role of the Commonwealth?
- On what global issues can the UK have the biggest impact and exercise the most leverage?
- How should we best target our resources?
- How should we best prioritise our aid commitments?
- How can we give today’s school and college-leavers better exposure to the challenge and opportunities of the rapidly-growing “BRICS” economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa)?
- How can we help more UK companies export outside the EU?
- How might we balance our future economic, strategic and humanitarian needs and responsibilities in the world – in the areas of defence and security, soft power, diplomatic priorities, boosting trade, and international development?
- What metrics could we use to measure the success of global Britain?
- Is there any other question you think should have been asked or observation you would like to make?
The full briefing paper can be obtained from the Central Office website. It would be helpful if you could let us know if you are coming to our meeting – please e-mail Linda Oliver via cpf@southcambsconservatives.co.uk.
A summary of responses to this paper will not be sent to the Secretary of State for Work & Pensions, the Rt Hon Amber Rudd MP or the Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work, Sarah Newton MP. It will be sent to CPF Chairman, George Freeman MP; Conservative Vice-Chairman for Policy, Chris Skidmore MP; and the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit within a month of the closing date for submissions.
- The next paper will be on Renewing our democracy, one of the five areas covered by the Prime Minister’s Policy Commission. It will be published in mid-February.
Do come to the CPF Dinner
George Freeman, the MP for Mid Norfolk and UK Chairman of the CPF, is our speaker at the 2019 CPF Dinner.
- Friday, 15th February at Bourn Golf and Leisure Club.
Report
As there is no report on the last discussion, in case you missed it, here's the report on The digital age – 17th October 2018
Our discussion moved from robotics to rebalancing employment opportunities, to government reporting systems, to telecoms and government being realistic about industry’s ability to deliver, e.g. roll out of 2020 superfast broadband.
We moved on to technical innovation, seed funding, R&D investment, Bitcoin and crypto currencies, protection of intellectual property by start-ups, education, social media and its many impacts. In brief, a wide variety of subjects within the Digital Age.
The synopsis of this discussion is being collated. It will be forwarded as soon as received from CPF Central.
About CPF
With almost 250 active CPF groups across the country and strong professional support from CCHQ**, the CPF has a vital role at the heart of the Conservative Party – with a direct line to the minister for government policy, its members have a real say in the direction our Party is taking.
CPF members played an important role during the 2017 general election, providing a number of contributions towards the manifesto we were elected on; the work of its members in our target seats made a real difference to the outcome.
As we implement our Conservative manifesto and start formulating our vision for 2022, it is as important as ever we demonstrate how only the Conservatives will make the difficult decisions needed to secure a better and brighter future for Britain.
Linda Oliver is the Chairman of this group, which exists to discuss an issue put forward by Conservative Central Office.
Through the CPF, the Party is kept informed of members’ opinions when deciding policy (unlike the Labour Party which appears only to take notice of its union paymasters).
The more members attending, the more valid your arguments and views – so please do come and listen to the arguments and air your views. All SCCA members are automatically eligible to join the discussion.
If you are not currently on the CPF mailing list, please e-mail scca@southcambsconservatives.co.uk ask for your name to be added.
