Andrew Lansley welcomes Government’s commitment to improve the A14 in Cambridgeshire
Campaigners and residents who have long called for improvements to the A14 are celebrating the Government’s announcement to commit major investment along the A14 corridor in Cambridge.
Secretary of State for Transport, Justine Greening, has today announced the Government’s proposals to address congestion and long-term capacity issues on and around the A14.
South Cambridgeshire MP Andrew Lansley, who has been campaigning to improve the A14 since he was first elected to Parliament over 15 years ago, has welcomed today’s announcement.
Andrew Lansley says: “Simply put, this is a great victory for Cambridgeshire. Together with the Cambridgeshire County Council and other local authorities and partners, this is an issue I have been extremely hard on behalf of my constituents, and I am delighted that the Government has made such a commitment today.
“The A14 is strategically crucial to our region and the country, yet for too long has been slowed and blocked by serious congestion. The impact of this on regional villages in my constituency has been awful.
"We will now finally get a route which works for long-distance traffic and which offers good local roads for local access. This represents a real step forward in boosting business and investor confidence across the region.
“I will continue to work with my local partners to see if we can accelerate the timetable for works. The important point is that this is now firmly on the Government’s plan and will be going ahead.”
Joining Andrew Lansley in welcoming the announcement is Cambridgeshire County Council Leader, Cllr Nick Clarke, who says: “I am delighted the Government has listed to us on the A14.
"This matters an enormous amount, not only for those making journeys around Cambridgeshire in terms of improving safety on this accident and congestion-blighted road, but as a big boost for our local and national economy
"I want to thank our MPs, our partner councils and the LEP for their hard work in driving this forward, as well as the willingness of the Government to work in new ways to deliver the scheme.”
