As I write this, the London Olympic Games are in full swing (with the Paralympic Games soon to follow) and already people throughout the world are hailing these Games as a great success.
Whether you are especially sporty or not, I am sure we can all agree that it is wonderful to come together as a nation in celebration of this moment and of our great athletes who have done us proud.
A special mention must also go to our own Olympic and Paralympic athletes from South Cambridgeshire who are participating in the Games.
It is also important to remember that that the Games are not just about the sporting events themselves, but also about the lasting legacy and the positive impact it will have upon our economy.
I must also recognise that the support we are giving to School Sports Clubs through Games 4 Life and Change 4 Life will help entrench the sporting legacy amongst our young people and future generations.
As part of the British Business Embassy, I have been busy promoting Britain's excellence in life sciences along with some of my Cabinet colleagues to dignitaries, leaders and members of the foreign press who are visiting the UK during this time.
Given Cambridgeshire's world-leading status in this field – we are home to the world’s number one life sciences cluster – it is especially important that we garner international recognition for our work in this area.
On constituency matters, I was very pleased to secure a victory on the issue of the A14 recently.
As many of you will know, this is an issue I have been campaigning hard on over the past 15 years (indeed, it was one of the first issues I took up following my election to Parliament in 1997) in collaboration with local partners.
The Transport Secretary, Justine Greening MP, recently announced the go-ahead for major works to address the problem of the congestion-plagued corridor.
As well as addressing the problems of congestion, safety and capacity on the A14, this will allow Cambridgeshire to seek actively new streams of investment into our local economy.
I know that some of you may have been affected by flooding in Girton following unusually heavy rainfall this summer, and the rebuild of the A14 must enable us to have a positive impact on drainage in the region (which I hope will help address the issue of flooding in the future).
Of course, this news on the A14 also means that the proposed new eco town at Northstowe – the largest number of much-needed new homes in our area – can now commence.
Finally, I was delighted with another local success when the Government recently announced approval for a new Cambourne Village College Free School.
I have been very supportive of the application (on the part of Comberton Village College and the local authority) from the beginning, so am very pleased to see that the Government has recognised the need for a new school in the area. All being well, the school should be open to students from September 2013.
Postscript Over 12,000 people have signed the petition for superfast broadband so far, 5,000 of those from South Cambridgeshire alone. If you have not already done so, please visit www.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk and register your name.
