Political discussion – Land of opportunity
- 7.30 pm.
- At the home of Mrs Jean Bacon in Comberton – contact details below.
- This is the fourth such discussion; previous events have been lively and well-attended.
At the 2013 Conservative Party Conference David Cameron called for “… a land of opportunity for all."
He listed actions that his government planned to take: cutting taxes and regulation, improving education, and infrastructure, limiting immigration, encouraging Scotland to remain within the UK and staging an in/out referendum on the EU.
He said that “there’s no shortcut to a land of opportunity”. But are the policies right?
Is the HS2, to be used by a few, more important than our inadequate
roads used by everyone?
Are we wise to prevent our successful businesses from hiring foreign
talent?
Should more be done to discourage talk of leaving the EU, upon which
our prosperity depends?
Should the government allow our R&D to fall so far behind our rivals when
the PM’s vision depends on innovation?
- Foreign countries are not just rivals; they are role models as well. The USA, Germany, Singapore and Denmark, to name a few, have different visions about how to achieve success and, in their different ways, they are more successful than the UK. Why? What can we learn?
- The Discussion – the format of this discussion will be as a moderated open forum with the chairman, Jon Dane, taking comments from the participants.
- The meeting should last about two hours.
- There will be light refreshments courtesy of our hostess.
- A voluntary donation of £5 is suggested to cover her costs.
- The objective of the discussion is to exchange information and opinions and, if interesting conclusions are reached, we will make them known to our local Conservative Office and to our MP.
- If you would like to attend, please let Jean Bacon know by e-mail to jeanbacon851@btinternet.com or by phone to 01223 264 711.
- Organised by Comberton and District Branch.
