Residents are being reminded by South Cambridge District Council to use only registered traders to take away bulky waste after three people were prosecuted for their rubbish being dumped in the local countryside.

One man, of Wood Lane, Papworth Everard, was fined £500, ordered to pay a £50 victim surcharge and £510 costs to South Cambridgeshire District Council after pallets and household waste dumped in Papworth St Agnes were traced back to him – labels on the pallets lead Council investigators to his address.  He said he paid two men he didn’t know £20 to take away the waste.  He failed to appear at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court and was found guilty in his absence.

A £100 fine, Council costs of £260 and a victim surcharge of £20 were also handed out to another man, of Mill Road, Cambridge, after he was summoned to court for failing in his Duty of Care regarding waste disposal under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.  Timber, flooring and black bags of waste were discovered on Mere Way, off Butt Lane in Milton.  Evidence from the waste was traced to him – he said he had paid £20 to remove the waste from a property in Cherry Hinton.

In a third case at the Magistrates’ Court, a 35 year old man of Kelvin Close, Cambridge was also fined after he paid £30 on the first occasion, and £40 for a second visit, to a van driver to take away waste including carpet, underlay and kitchen fittings.  He had arranged for Cambridge City Council to remove the waste but chose to pay the men instead.  The first load was found fly-tipped in Derwent Close, Cherry Hinton and the second load was found in Low Fen Drove, Fen Ditton.  He appeared at court and was fined a total of £200, ordered to pay costs to South Cambridge District and Cambridge City councils totalling £350 as well as a £20 victim surcharge.

South Cambridgeshire District Council is reiterating the need for residents to make sure they use authorised waste carriers, registered with the Environment Agency, to dispose of rubbish.  To check for licensed traders visit www.environment-agency.gov.uk and search the public register for waste carriers.  You can also phone 08708 506 506.

Cllr Mick Martin, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member for environmental services, said: “We constantly remind people that it is their responsibility to make sure waste is disposed correctly.

"As a rule of thumb, if the deal being offered sounds too good to be true, it probably is – and you could find yourself paying the price in the long run.  People in South Cambridgeshire hate fly tipping and we will continue to take action against those who think it is acceptable to carry out this practice.”
