South Cambridgeshire District Council is the best collector of taxes in East Anglia – and at 99.4%, has the second highest level of council tax collection in the UK.

Figures released by the Department for Local Government show that the high levels of collection ranked the Council as the second best collector of council tax in the country and 22nd best for business rates.

Overall, just over £100 million council tax was due to be collected by the Council on behalf of itself, Cambridgeshire County Council, the Police and Crime Commissioners office, Fire Authority and parish councils.

A further £73 million of business rates was also due to be collected.

Council Tax collection levels have increased from 99.1% in 2013/14 to 99.4% this year.  Business rate collection also improved, climbing from 98.7% to 99.4%.

Councillors have thanked residents and businesses for paying their bills on time. They are encouraging anyone who is not already paying by direct debit to do so as it is the quickest and easiest way to make sure you do not miss a payment.

Anyone struggling to pay a bill is also being urged to contact the Council early for support and advice before debts begin to accumulate.

Cllr Simon Edwards, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member for finance, said: “I would like to thank and congratulate our collection teams who do a fantastic job.

"Maintaining our place as the best collector in East Anglia is brilliant news and being positioned second nationally for council tax is even better.  We all know we must pay our bills but our team really come into their own when people have difficulties.

"If you are struggling to pay your bill please talk to our experienced team sooner rather than later as we have a range of options to support you when you most need it."
